National Writers Series Award

A 200 level student of English and
Communication Studies Programme of Federal University Otuoke, Mr. Julius Bokoru
has been honoured by the National Executive of the Association of Nigerian
Authors (ANA) for his memoir titled “The Angel that was always there”.
Mr. Julius Bokoru was selected among
the 10 best writers in Nigeria by the literary hierarchy to pioneer the
celebrated Nigerian Writers Series, a project of the National Executive of ANA
under the sponsorship of Niger State Government.
Mr. Bokoru stated that the book
which is on single parenting though unpublished is a product of his passion for
writing, disclosing that the award winning literary piece was written in 2013
at the Ebedi International writers residency, Iseyin, Oyo State.
“I was motivated to write because I
just love writing, I feel complete when I write, often when my imagination is
sparked-up, writing makes it easier for me to express them”. The young writer
said.
Niger State Government led by Dr.
Babangida Aliyu had earlier donated 10 Million Naira to ANA as sponsorship for
award to 10 selected Nigerian Authors and four Publishing firms to kick start
the Nigerian Writers Series.
FUO Media Team gathered that a total
of 50 submissions were received by ANA of which 38 were valid and 12 invalid,
following an exhaustive screening by literary giants and scholars; Prof. Tanure
Ojaide, Prof. Unoma Azuah and Dr. Chuma Nwankolo.
Among the 38 valid manuscript, the
editors cleared the under listed 10 for publication as pioneers of the Nigerian
Writers Series: Souza Boy by Elias Ozikpu, Cupid’s Catapult by
Hannah Onoguwe, Burning Savanna by Hillary.C. Anugba, The Right
Choice by Zahradeen Kallah, The Oath by Habib Yaqood.
Others are: Crimson Clouds by
Ayodele Arowosegbe, The Threshing Floor by Isaac Ogezi, Cat Eyes
by Pever X, The Angel That Was Always There (Memoir) by our Julius
Bokoru and Patriots and Sinners by Nnenna Ihebom.
The Selected publishing firms
awarded the publishing contract include: The Book Company, Jemie Books,
Kraftbooks and Parresia Publishers Limited.
Mr. Bokoru who said a letter of
Contract has been issued to him advised his fellow students not to allow any
challenge stop them from achieving their goal, urging those with the flair for
writing not to be discouraged.
“I will advise my colleagues who
love writing to always write and should not be discouraged by any factor” he
said.
He further thanked the Governor of
Niger State for the support, describing his effort as exemplary and called on
more Nigerians and organizations to join in the support for Nigerian authors so
that literary works will not die in the country.
In a chat with the Dean, Faculty of
Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Philomena Ejele, Mr. Julius Bokoru was
described as a hardworking student who has proven that spare time can be used
by students for positive gains.
The Dean used the medium to advice
other students of FUO to engage in personal activities that will bring glory to
the Institution.
Meanwhile, Management of Federal
University Otuoke has sent the student writer a congratulatory letter through
the Dean, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Prof. Philomena Ejele,
commending him for bringing pride to the University.
The Memoir by Mr. Julius Bokoru
which is about 40,000 words is presently being edited for publication by
Parresia Publishers and is expected to be launched on August 13, 2014 in Minna
by the Niger State Governor, Dr. Babangida Aliyu.
